March 2nd is Read Across America Day
Ten years ago, NEA (National Education Association) started a reading revolution. From a one-day celebration of Dr. Seuss's birthday to a year-round literacy campaign reaching nearly every home, school, and community, NEA's Read Across America is building a nation of readers. And the East Moline - Silvis Rotary Club wants to be a part of it. We are currently identifying locations where Rotarians can volunteer to read to children on March 1st and 2nd. More information will be available soon.Every Rotarian Every Year
Have you contributed to the Rotary Foundation this year? With more than half of the Rotary year already gone, the District is only 40% to the goal of $168,765. It's easy to give, just write a check and give it to Carl or ask to have a gift amount added to your quarterly dues. Matching funds may be available for those interested in a Paul Harris Fellowship.
Rail Service Coming Soon?
Maybe not real soon, but we may be able to look forward to rail service connecting the Illinois Quad Cities' downtowns. MetroLink's Jeff Nelson filled us in on the latest happenings in mass transit. In addition to local rail service, we may soon enjoy rail service to Chicago. But, Jeff said, they are still "jumping through hoops" to get those things done.
Jeff reported that MetroLink is enjoying continued growth in ridership even with gas prices coming back down. For just $25 a month, a person can ride as often as they want to. In 2006, MetroLink transported 2.3 million people.
